B
Once upon a time there lived a crow (乌鸦) in a tree. At the root (根部) of
the same tree, a snake built its home there.
Whenever the crow had eggs, the snake would find them and eat them up.
The crow felt helpless and thought, “I must teach that bad snake a lesson.”
One day, the crow flew over the king's palace (宫殿). She saw a princess
(公主) wearing an expensive necklace (项链). Suddenly she got an idea. She
swooped down, picked up the necklace and flew off to her nest.
Seeing this, the palace guards (护卫) ran after the crow and followed her to
the tree. The clever crow thought, “Now is the time to act.” She dropped the
necklace, and it fell right beside the snake's home. When the snake heard the
noise, it came out of its home. The guards saw the snake, and shouted, “A
snake! A snake! Kill it!” With big sticks, they beat the snake and killed it.
Then the guards picked up the necklace and went back to the palace.
The crow was very happy. “Now my eggs will be safe,” she said.

Inishmore is a beautiful little island in the west of Ireland. It is very different from 70 years ago.
Colman Coneely, a 90-year-old islander, says, “When I was young, tourists couldn’t get to Inishmore. There wasn’t an airport(机场)or any ferry boats in those days. There were only donkeys and small fishing boats for getting around. Life was difficult. We didn’t have much money—we only had small stone cottages. We didn’t even have electricity(电)or running water! Inishmore was a quiet place.”
Today, thousands of tourists visit Inishmore a day. “Now there is an airport,” says Colman. “There are also cars, buses, bicycles and big ferry boats. Life is very easy now. We have got new, modern houses. We have also got electricity and running water. Inishmore is very busy now. There are guest houses, restaurants and lots of souvenir shops.”
