NEWater: Turning Wastewater into Clean Water
About the Project
Singapore is a small island with almost no natural rivers or lakes. For years, the city depended on imported water from Malaysia. This made clean water a serious problem. In 2003, Singapore's national water agency, PUB, launched NEWater—a project that collects used water, cleans it through several steps, and turns it into safe drinking water.
Today, NEWater meets about 40% of Singapore's daily water needs. Experts say this number will rise to 55% by 2060. It will be supplied to homes and factories across the city.
How Does It Work?
The process has three main stages. First, harmful substances are removed from used water collected from homes and buildings. Second, the water passes through very fine filters that block tiny particles. Third, it goes through a final treatment using ultraviolet(紫外线) light, which kills any remaining bacteria(细菌). After all three stages, the water is cleaner than most tap water.
What Has It Solved?
Before NEWater, Singapore's water supply was easily affected by pollution and dry weather. Now, even during dry seasons, the city has enough clean water. The project has also reduced the harmful effects of wastewater being released into the sea. Marine life near the coast has noticeably recovered.
