四、(2025·南通市崇川区、如皋二模)阅读理解。(每小题3分,共12分)
How many times would you keep trying, even if you failed again and again? Jose Hernandez kept trying 12 times over 12 years until he finally realized his dream of becoming an astronaut.
Hernandez was born in Mexico. He lived a difficult life when he was young. As the son of a migrant (移居的) farmer, he had to work on different farms to make a living. He travelled with his parents and helped them pick vegetables, following the growing seasons from Mexico to the farmlands of California in the south-western United States. As a result, he faced challenges in learning English. But he found balance in other subjects, especially in Maths and Science, because two plus three is five in any language. So he became interested in engineering when he was really young, inspired by his love for numbers and logic. Then, at the age of nine, when he watched TV and saw the astronaut walk on the moon's surface in the Apollo lunar mission, he had his real dream of becoming an astronaut.
When he shared his newfound dream with his parents, they sat him down at the kitchen table and told him some keys to success: a clear goal, an understanding of the steps to get from where you are to where you want to be, hard work, education and most importantly, heart. With their support,
Hernandez worked tirelessly to achieve his dream. Years later, he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering and later earned a higher degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Hernandez's educational career finally met some of the requirements to become an astronaut. So he sent his first application to NASA. Then he started receiving one rejection(拒绝) letter after the other, 11 times in total.
But he never gave up. He looked at the skills that the selected(选定的) astronauts had and that he didn't. He learnt to fly and dive, developing the skills he was short of. Finally, in 2004, his efforts paid off. He was selected as an astronaut by NASA.
After years of training, Hernandez's dream came true when he flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2009. Just as he said, "Everything is possible in life when you are willing to work hard, plan, and not give up."
