Huang Xuhua: the “father of China’s nuclear submarine”

Chinese scientist Huang Xuhua was the chief designer(首席设计师) of China’s first nuclear submarine.
Huang was born in 1926 in Guangdong. When he was young, he experienced the war. He wanted to make strong ships to help China.
In 1945, he studied shipbuilding in a university in Shanghai. After graduating in 1949, he started working for China’s shipbuilding industry(工业).
In 1958, Huang started to work on China’s first nuclear submarine. At that time, China almost knew nothing about it. Huang and his team worked day and night. They looked for information in newspapers and magazines. And they used abacuses(算盘) and rulers to do the maths.
After years of hard work, they solved many problems and succeeded. On December 26th, 1970, China’s first nuclear submarine was successfully launched(下水). This made China the fifth country in the world to have a nuclear submarine.
Today, people call Huang the “father of China’s nuclear submarine”. If we work hard and never give up like him, our big dreams will come true!
