Corn, but looks like gems!
Corn is mostly white or yellow, but some can be very colourful, such as Glass Gem Corn(玻璃宝石玉米) from North America. With amazing rainbow colours, it looks like it is made up of gemstones. However, believe it or not, Glass Gem Corn is not dyed(染色的) or painted.

Carl Barnes, a farmer from the US, invents Glass Gem Corn. He collects ancient corn seeds(种子) and crossbred(杂交) a few kinds of corn of different colours. From this, he gets the first seeds of Glass Gem Corn. With each year of planting, the corn get brighter and more colourful.

Each kernel(粒) is a different corn plant, so it has genes(基因) from many corn family members. These different genes give it its colours. No two corns are the same. People don’t know what the corn will look like until they eat it.

Glass Gem Corn is hard to chew(咀嚼), but it’s helpful for digesting(消化) food because it’s high in fiber(纤维). It is usually used to make popcorn or flour(面粉). People also put the corn out in the air for drying for about a week. Once it’s fully dried, Glass Gem Corn can last for many years.
