What is a driverless car? It is a self-driving car. In the near future, driverless cars may be everywhere on the road. Zoox, an American self-driving car company（公司）, has been developing its own driverless cars for over 9 years. Now its "robotaxi" has successfully begun carrying passengers on public roads.
The robotaxi looks like a minibus with four wheels. Inside is a large, open space with four comfortable seats. However, rather than all facing forward, passengers sit on two benches（长凳）, facing each other. The car has no front or back, so it can go either way.
Now the company is testing the robotaxi on public roads. The car can only carry Zoox's workers on a 1. 6-kilometre public road between two office buildings of the company in Foster City, California. Though the robotaxi runs on electricity, it can go at up to 120 kilometres an hour. But it can only go about 56 kilometres an hour in the tests because of the speed limit.
Driverless cars are a hot topic. Inventing driverless cars is many scientists' and engineers' passion（激情）. Many companies around the world are developing driverless cars. But most of them are just normal cars, only with added self-driving technology on them. Zoox's car is different because it has been built to have no driver. For that reason, the robotaxi doesn't have some of the things you might expect to find in a car, such as pedals（踏板）. In fact, it doesn't even have a steering wheel or a seat for the driver!
Zoox hopes to put their invention into use in the future. With their driverless cars, they believe the future roads will be safer, cleaner and more enjoyable for everyone.
