“Do we have to?”
My eight-year-old son, Nick, was tired of travelling. When we arrived at our final stop in Paris, he just wanted to go home.
He frowned(皱眉) as he watched me dance around our hotel room. I was excited because I managed to book a table at L’Ami Louis. For years, I had wanted to eat at the restaurant. Michael, my husband, wasn’t as excited. “Another overpriced French meal,” he complained.
In the end, they agreed to come along. Nick locked his eyes on a golden heap(一堆) of French fries as it crossed the dining room. “It might be okay,” he whispered. The waiter looked at him for a moment and then disappeared. He returned with a huge plate of those airy fried potatoes. “You look hungry,” he said as he set the plate down in front of Nick.
“I think I’m going to like it here,” my son said.
“Isn’t that Carole Bouquet?” Michael pointed across the room to a family sitting with a boy about Nick’s age. The woman looked a lot like the famous
French actress, but it was hard to tell in the dark restaurant. “Maybe,” I said. “Film people love this place.”
The waiter then appeared with our escargots(French snails). A cloud of garlic and butter came across the table. After setting the plate down, he said something to Nick. He pointed, and Nick followed the boy from Carole Bouquet’s table out the door. “Don’t worry, Madam,” the waiter said. “It’s just a game for the neighbourhood kids.”
The boys disappeared until the waiter brought in a chocolate cake. They sat together, like friends now, unwilling to join the adults. That was fine with us—we were making our own friends while enjoying the wine. The restaurant had become a dinner party.
It was late when the evening ended. “That,” my son said as we walked back to the hotel, “is a very fine restaurant.”
“But all you ate was French fries and chocolate cake,” I pointed out.
“I guess restaurants aren’t really about the food,” he replied. “Can we go back tomorrow?”
