China has a civilization(文明) of more than five thousand years and is famous for its great ancient inventions all over the world. Among the Four Great Inventions of ancient China, papermaking plays an important role and has a great influence around the world.
Before paper was invented in ancient times, Chinese people wrote on heavy bamboo slips(竹简), boards or hard stone walls. Bamboo slips were too heavy for people to carry, and needed a lot of bamboo materials. Stone writing was hard to move. At that time, keeping written records was very difficult for common people.
