Hou Yifan, 29, started playing chess when she was 5. When she was little, her parents took her to the local Children's Palace and had her try playing different games.
"The interesting shapes of those funny chess pieces caught my eye," said Yifan, "so I decided to learn to play chess." At first, Yifan played chess as a hobby until two years later, she met her coach Tong Yuanming, a chess master, and then started to receive(接受) professional training.
"Chess is a game full of uncertainties. Even when there are only five or six pieces left on the board, you won't be able to predict all the possibilities during a game," said Yifan. "It is a game about practice and strategy(策略)."
