Many Americans love sports. This does not really mean that they get any exercise. What they do is watching matches on TV. They watch baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf and tennis matches, which means that for most of the weekends they sit in front of the TV. Sometimes, their friends watch with them.
Baseball, the most popular game, is a great American sport and every team has fans. Almost every big city has a team, and as each team plays 162 games a year, following baseball can take up a lot of time. The playing season begins in spring and finishes in the World Series (世界大赛) in autumn, when two leading (领先的) teams play against each other. The first to win four games wins. Although called World Series, it has only one other country to take part in—Canada.
Football played in autumn and winter is also popular. It is not like the game called soccer at all. There isn't much kicking in American football, which has more to do with running with the ball. Each team only plays 16 games during the season, and these usually take place on Sundays and Monday evenings. Half of people in the country watch the final game on a Sunday, in January.
When there are no good games on TV, Americans watch college sports. Many colleges feel that if they want their former (以前) students to help their old schools, they need a winning football team. To our surprise, this seems to be true.

解析

4. 第4题:先理解前文句子“Many colleges feel that if they want their former students to help their old schools, they need a winning football team.”,“this”指代的就是这个观点,据此判断句子含义。
2. 第2题:根据第二段最后一句“Although called World Series, it has only one other country to take part in—Canada.”
3. 第3题:根据第三段“which has more to do with running with the ball”可知美式橄榄球运动员经常带球奔跑,A选项正确;B选项“Players can't kick the ball”与原文“isn't much kicking”不符;C选项“final game is on a Monday”与原文“watch the final game on a Sunday”不符;D选项“There are only 16 games during the season”错误,原文是“Each team only plays 16 games”,并非总共16场。故选A。
4. 第4题:前文提到“Many colleges feel that if they want their former students to help their old schools, they need a winning football team.”,“this seems to be true”中的“this”指代的就是这个观点,即学校的橄榄球队获胜的话,更容易得到往届学生的帮助,故选D。
5. 第5题:文章开篇点明“Many Americans love sports...What they do is watching matches on TV”,后续段落分别介绍美国人观看的各类体育赛事,所以写作目的是展示美国人对观看体育赛事的喜爱,故选B。
