If we know an object's distance(距离) and its time, we can find out more information about the object. For example, we can find out its speed. Speed is the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time. When we talk about speed, we are talking about the relationship between distance and time.
Speed is important in our everyday life. We can see some signs of speed limits in streets. In the UK, the unit of time for cars are given in miles per hour. The miles tell you the distance, and the hour is the unit of time. Speed limits often change. That depends on where you are driving. Driving cars near schools must go at a slower speed.
When we compare two objects travelling the same distance, we usually see which one finishes first. That is the one with greater speed. Suppose a tortoise and a hare could both run a 5-metre race. Which one would win? The hare has greater speed, so it would finish first.
We can also look at speed another way. We can compare two objects that are travelling for the same amount of time. We look to see which one goes farther in that time. The one that travels farther has higher speed. Suppose a hare races against a cheetah(猎豹). If the hare and the cheetah run for an hour, the cheetah will run farther because it has higher speed.

)29. If a car's speed is 100 miles per hour and it runs for half an hour, the distance it travels is
.
A. 50 miles
B. 80 miles
C. 100 miles

A. Two.
B. Three.
C. Four.
D. Five.
(
B
)31. Why does the writer mention the tortoise and the hare in Paragraph 3?
A. Because both of them are used from the same fairy tale.
B. Because they are used to explain speed, time and distance.
C. Because the tortoise runs slowly but wins the running race.
D. Because the hare is the fastest and the tortoise is the slowest.
(

答案

29.A 30.B 31.B 32.C 33.D
解析:根据文中“We can compare two objects that are travelling for the same amount of time. We look to see which one goes farther in that time. The one that travels farther has higher speed”,可知“相同时间内,速度越低的物体移动距离越近”。

29.A 30.B 31.B 32.C 33.D
