She is an amazing woman who has got over life's greatest difficulty to become one of the most famous painters in China. Zhang Junli, from Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, has been paralyzed (瘫痪) for about 40 years. When she was six, Zhang caught a serious illness. Two years later, she could not move 90% of her body. She can only move her hips, shoulders and neck little now.
However, being paralyzed never stopped her from trying to follow her dreams. Zhang was interested in drawing at a young age and started learning oil painting in 2015. She has learned it for about eleven years. Though it is hard for her to pick up a paintbrush, her love for painting has always pushed her to challenge herself. “Painting has changed me. The first time I picked up a brush, I felt that I lived to draw,” says Zhang. “The world is so beautiful. Even if I am in poor health, I don’t want to give up the chance to live.” Now Zhang has created thousands of pencil sketches (素描) and watercolors. She also owns an online shop called Lily’s Easel, where she sells her artworks.
Zhang wants to use her artworks to encourage those disabled people who are like her, and to tell them never to give up. “Instead of crying and worrying all day, find something meaningful in life, and live in the present.” says Zhang, a real fighter.
