My favourite book is The Old Man and the Sea. It was written by Ernest Hemingway, a famous American writer. He published it in 1952. The book became popular very quickly.
The story is about an old fisherman named Santiago. He caught nothing for 84 days. People said he was unlucky. But Santiago did not give up. He believed he could catch a big fish.
On the 85th day, he went far out to sea. He caught a huge fish. It was bigger than his boat! Santiago couldn't pull it onto his boat. He fought it for two days and two nights. He never stopped trying. Finally, he killed the fish.
On his way home, sharks(鲨鱼) came. They ate the fish. Santiago fought the sharks, but he was too weak. When he got home, only the fish skeleton(骨架) was left.
Santiago did not bring back the fish, but he did not feel defeated(被打败的). He said, “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” The book teaches me that trying our best is more important than winning.
