1.
terrible earthquake hit Japan on the 4th of January. What
awful day!

A.The; an
B.A; an
C.The; a
D.An; an

答案

1.B

2. 第二空:what引导的感叹句中,形容词awful的发音首音素为元音,需用不定冠词an,构成“What an awful day!”

2.
you are free this weekend, try your best
this report.

A.Since; finish
B.If; finish
C.While; to finish
D.Since; to finish

答案

2.D

2. 第二空:固定搭配try one's best to do sth意为“尽力做某事”,需接动词不定式,因此第二空用to finish,排除A项的动词原形finish。
D
连词用法、固定搭配(try one's best to do sth)

3. —You look tired. What's wrong with you?
—I stayed up late last night. I
my speech from eight o'clock to midnight.

A.practiced
B.am practicing
C.was practicing
D.practice

答案

3.C

主语是I,因此用“was practicing”。

4. That day, the questions suddenly ran
my mind as soon as I put down the phone.

A.on
B.from
C.through
D.across

答案

4.C

逐一分析选项:A项run on表示“继续;涉及”,不符合语境;B项run from表示“从……

5. —Mum, I called before dinner, but nobody answered.
—I was cooking in the kitchen
your sister was doing her homework.

A.because
B.while
C.when
D.until

答案

5.B

【解析】逐一分析选项:A.put out意为“扑灭(火、火灾等)”;B.put on意为“穿上;上演”;C.put in意为“提交;放入”;D.put up意为“张贴;搭建;举起”。

Tsunamis are giant waves in the ocean that get bigger as they come closer to land. They can be very dangerous, flooding cities and destroying homes.
Tsunamis happen when a lot of water is suddenly moved. This can be caused by earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes erupting, or ice breaking off glaciers.
Most tsunamis come from earthquakes. An earthquake happens when a big piece of the earth suddenly moves. Under water, this can make big gaps(裂口) on the ocean floor. When water fills these gaps, a tsunami occurs. After the water is moved by an earthquake, waves spread out from where the water moves. These waves can travel fast and far. Some tsunamis have crossed thousands of miles and moved as fast as 500 miles per hour.
Tsunamis are hard to see in deep water because the waves are small. But near land, they grow tall. When a tsunami reaches the shore(海岸), it can be a high wall of water that rushes inland, sometimes for a long way and very quickly.
Tsunamis can happen in any large body of water, but they are often seen in the Pacific Ocean. Countries like Japan, Chile, and the United States along the Pacific Ocean are at risk. However, tsunamis can happen anywhere. In 2004, a huge earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a tsunami that killed over 230,000 people.
Coastal areas often have systems to warn about tsunamis. If there's an earthquake that might cause a tsunami, people are told to leave or go to the high ground.

A. What can lead to a tsunami?
B. Why are tsunamis dangerous?
C. Which tsunami is the worst in history?
D. Where does a tsunami often take place?
2. What does the underlined word "occurs" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Disappears.
B. Agrees.
C. Happens.
D. Reaches.
3. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How tsunamis change the land.
B. Why tsunamis are hard to prevent in deep water.
C. Why tsunami waves are hard to see.
D. How tsunami waves change along the way.
4. Why does the writer talk about the tsunami in 2004 in Paragraph 5?
A. To take pity on the 230,000 people.
