The Mount Hood Search and Rescue Team saved three teenagers from the Cascade Mountains yesterday. The boys wanted to climb Mount Hood but they had problems when the weather suddenly changed. “It started snowing and it was freezing cold,” said Tom Hutchison. “We wanted to get back quickly so we left the mountain trail (小道).” But conditions became difficult and dangerous. “We all fell. And I cut my knee.” Things got worse when Mike Calvert fell and broke his leg. “We tried to make emergency calls but our phones didn’t work,” said Dan Foster. “Then, we were worried that no one was going to find us.”
At 9 pm, the boys’ worried parents called the emergency services. The search and rescue team found the boys at 7 am. Rescue Team Leader Brad Fox said they made some mistakes.
“They should tell someone where they were going and they shouldn’t leave without checking the weather,” he said. “They should have a map and some food, some water, and a first aid kit (急救包).” Brad said the boys’ biggest mistake was leaving the trail. “If they had stayed on the trail, they wouldn’t have had so many problems.” But the boys did something right. “When Mike fell, they stayed where they were,” said Brad.|
