Before losing herself in Chinese calligraphy for hours, Ma Huiyan always makes a cup of tea using a beautiful tea set. She says it’s the perfect way to relax after a busy week. Ma Huiyan, a 32-year-old office worker in Shanghai, found her love for this art. Though she also enjoys painting, calligraphy is where she finds inner(内心的) peace. “Focusing on every stroke clears my mind. Finishing a piece gives me great pride,” she says.
“At a time when people use a computer keyboard for writing, the ancient Chinese art of writing with a history of several thousand years still leaves a lasting mark on people’s lives,” said Fang Yuan, a calligraphy researcher. He opened a calligraphy course at Peking University in 2019. “Writing calligraphy is not for practical use. The movements of the brush are for perfect balance of one’s hands and mind,” says Fang. He points out that people can learn calligraphy at any age.
For Zhou Jinshuo, writing calligraphy is more like doing sports. The 79-year-old man has been writing on the ground with a brush for 10 years. He needs just water and a metre-long brush. When the weather is good, he goes to a park and writes on the ground. “Writing on the ground is very environmentally friendly. Every time I finish my practice, I feel like finishing a set of tai chi exercises,” he says.
Calligraphy’s charm remains strong even in the modern age. As Fang says, “When most people type on keyboards, this ancient art helps modern hearts find peace.”
