C
I looked up and saw a complete island in the sky! I saw people fishing from the bottom of the island and on top there was a town or a city. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I began to shout for help. People did not understand me, but they realized I was in difficulty and sent a chair down to pull me up.
The people on the island were friendly but very strange. They wore unusual clothes and each had a personal servant (仆人) who carried a large balloon on a stick. The servant’s job was to tap (轻拍) his master on the mouth or ear when the master needed to speak or listen. This was because the masters spent most of their time in deep thought, often about strange subjects for hours each day. As a result, they had no sense of practical things like speaking, listening, or looking where they were going. I later learned the island was called Laputa.
Some people brought me to the king. He was deep in thought and didn’t notice me. I waited for over an hour until a servant tapped his mouth, and he spoke. I didn’t understand their language and couldn’t answer. A servant tried to tap my mouth with a balloon to make me speak. I quickly said, “I know when to speak and listen.” They understood but thought I was foolish (愚笨) because I didn’t spend time thinking like they did.
Soon my dinner arrived, beautifully cut into mathematical symbols. After dinner, a servant taught me their language and explained life on Laputa. I learned the Laputians were skilled in mathematics and music, but they designed fantastic houses which were impossible to live in. Also, their deep thought made them worried all the time.
Only the women seemed to be relaxed and happy. They thought their husbands were as boring as the subjects they studied. I completely agreed with them. How can a person be interesting if he or she only thinks about mathematics or science? For this reason, the women of Laputa were much more interesting than the men.
