In Haiti, in the 2010 earthquake, half of the schools were destroyed. The students could go on learning because of a project called “School in a Box”. People used a large box with all the things required to set up a mini school. There were workbooks and textbooks, pencils and rulers. The lid (盖子) could be changed into a blackboard with a special blackboard paint sent with the box. These “School in a Box” boxes were often one of the first sets of educational supplies sent out to refugee camps (难民营). They gave a sense of hope to refugee communities and provided children with chances for further development.
In Bangladesh, the difficult situation is an ongoing one. Flooding during the rainy season means that children can’t go to school for many months of a year. Floating boat schools can solve the problem. The first school boat began travelling the waterways in 2002. There are now 90 boats and they travel along a 250-kilometre stretch of rivers in north-western Bangladesh. The schools get electricity through solar panels (太阳能电池板) and the panels can run four computers each. They can also use the internet. One boat can provide education for up to 35 children at a time for three hours a day. The boat stops at a few villages, picks up students of similar ages and abilities, gives lessons, returns them to their village at the end of their school time and then moves on to a new group of students.
It’s nice to see that creativity is still helping to make learning possible when people are facing great difficulties. Knowledge can be gained (获得) anywhere as long as there is a strong wish to make it happen!
