During the breaks (休息) between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often had to run to the toilet and then back to class with no time for anything else. But now things are different. “I can have more time to rest and share interesting things with my classmates,” said the 14-year-old boy.
Starting from the autumn term of 2024, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have had longer breaks between classes—from 10 minutes in the past to 15 minutes now. Students now can spend more time outside, so they can be healthier and happier.
Many schools have spaces for reading, playing the piano and even playing with animals. To help children enjoy break-time activities better, some schools have mixed break time with labor education (劳动教育) by opening planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区).
“We have some ducks and rabbits in our school!” said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School. “During the breaks, we can play with these cute animals or exercise on the playground. It is relaxing to get closer to nature.”
