At 7 o'clock, Della was ready to cook the chops(猪排). Jim was never late. She sat near the door, holding the chain(链条) she had bought for his watch. Then she heard his step on the stairs, and her face turned white. She said in a low voice to herself: "Please, make him think I am still pretty."
The door opened and Jim came in. He looked thin and serious. He needed a new coat and had no gloves.
Jim stopped inside the door and stood completely still. He juststared at Della’s hair in a big surprise. She had never seen him look like that before.
Della went up to him. "Jim, don’t look at me that way. I sold my hair to buy you a Christmas present. It’ll grow again. Say ‘Merry Christmas’, and let’s be happy."
"You’ve cut off your hair?" Jim asked slowly.
"Don’t you like me anyway? I’m still me without my hair, aren’t I?" said Della.
Jim hugged her, then took a package from his pocket and threw it on the table.
Della opened the paper and cried out with joy—and then with tears. Inside was a beautiful comb(梳子) she had wanted for so long. Now she had them, but her long hair was gone.
She tried to smile. "My hair grows very fast, Jim!"
Then she held out the watch chain. "Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks."
Jim didn’t take the chain. He lay down on the couch and smiled.
"Della," he said, "let’s put our Christmas presents away for a while. You see ... I sold the watch to buy your comb. So now, let’s just put the chops on."
