Have you ever wondered why you can remember the words to your favourite song but struggle to recall what you ate for breakfast yesterday? The answer lies in how our brains process and store information. Memory is not just one thing but a complex system that involves different parts of the brain working together.
Scientists often describe memory as having three main stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Encoding is when the brain takes in information through our senses. Storage is how we keep that information over time, and retrieval is when we access it again later. Our brains have two major types of memory: short-term and long-term memory. Short-term memory, like a temporary(暂时的)notepad, can only hold about seven items for around 20 seconds. Long-term memory, however, can store huge amounts of information for years, even a lifetime.
So, why do we forget things? Forgetting is actually a normal brain function. One reason is that if we don't use certain memories, the connections between brain cells (细胞) become weaker over time. Another reason is that new information can sometimes interfere(干扰) with old memories, making them harder to recall. But the good news is that we can improve our memory. Getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and practising active recall—such as testing yourself instead of just rereading notes—are all effective ways to keep our memory sharp and healthy.
