A long time ago, there was a great man called Mencius (孟子). When he was a little boy, he was clever and liked copying (模仿) people around him. Mencius’ mother knew how to teach children well. She wanted her son to learn well and have a good future.
At first, they lived near a cemetery (墓地). People went there for funerals (葬礼). They cried, dug holes and buried the dead (埋葬死者). Little Mencius copied them. He cried and acted like people at funerals. His mother thought this place was bad for him, so they to a house near a market. Mencius watched the sellers and copied them. He shouted, quarrelled (吵架) or lied, and tried to sell things. His mother was unhappy and moved again. They lived next to a school. Mencius saw students reading, studying and being polite. He started to learn good manners and study hard.
His mother was happy and said this was the right place for him. They stayed there. Later, Mencius studied hard and became a famous great thinker in history (历史).
