C
Chinese scientists have created a real map of rice genes(基因). This map has genes from both wild rice and farmed rice. This will help people grow better rice.
The study came out in Nature. Scientists studied 145 rice samples(样本), mostly wild rice. Using cool technology, they created a “pangenome”—a full list of all rice genes. This map has lots of genes only from wild rice.
Han Bin, one of the scientists, explained that earlier studies used only one rice sample. It couldn’t show differences between all genes. The new pangenome helps scientists study the differences between farmed rice and wild rice as wild rice has something special to help it to live in difficult environments.
Michelle Trenkmann from Nature said, “Many genes from wild rice help the rice fight diseases. These can help improve rice.”
The gene map has over 69,000 genes. About 20% are only in wild rice and help rice fight diseases or get used to(习惯于) different environments. Scientists found wild rice has more disease-resistant(抗病) genes than farmed rice. “This shows that wild rice can provide important genes to develop stronger rice kinds,” Han said.
Rice is food for about 60% of the world’s people. With this new gene map, scientists can now find useful genes in wild rice, learn about where important genes come from, and understand how rice gets used to different environments.
Han added that this study would help create new rice kinds that could fight diseases better, grow better in difficult environments and produce more rice.
