If you stand in the middle of Shanghai and look up,you might feel like the city is spinning(旋转).That is exactly the feeling that architects hoped for when they designed the Shanghai Tower,which was completed in 2015.
The Shanghai Tower stands 632 metres tall,making it the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world. It was built in Lujiazui,the financial heart of Pudong. From above,its floor plan is roughly circular(圆形的),and the outer glass skin of the building twists as it rises,turning a total of 120 degrees from the base to the top. This twist was not chosen just for looks. When wind hits a twisting surface,it is pushed aside rather than blocked. As a result,the force on the building was reduced by about 24 percent. This meant that less steel was needed,which saved a great deal of money during construction.
Inside,the tower is divided into nine zones. Each zone has its own "sky lobby(空中大堂)",a shared space filled with plants,natural light from the skylights above,and small shops or cafés. These sky lobbies are placed at different heights throughout the building,giving people who work or visit there a chance to rest and enjoy a view of the city far below.
The building was also designed with the environment in mind. Rainwater is collected and reused. Wind turbines(风力涡轮机) near the top generate a small amount of electricity. The space between the inner and outer walls acts like a coat,keeping the building warm in winter and cool in summer.
