When you think of festivals in China, you might picture dragon and lion dances. But in Sihong, Jiangsu, people will say the Qiangan Dance.
A qiangan is made of bamboo or wood. There are copper coins on it. People dance to music. They use the qiangan to tap their arms, legs and other body parts. It became an intangible cultural heritage in Jiangsu in 2023.
Hu Bo, 50, is the president of the Qiangan Dance Association in Sihong County. He started learning the dance at a young age.
He believes Qiangan Dance shows the Huaihe culture. Sihong County is near to the Huai River. It divides northern and southern China. "So the Qiangan Dance mixes the softer style of southern China with the stronger moves of northern China," Hu said.
These days, few people practise Qiangan Dance. Hu wanted to pass the dance down to others. So he made a team in 2013. Now, about 30 people from his team can do the Qiangan Dance on stage.
Hu Bo also posts Qiangan Dance videos on the social media to get more attention. "Through the videos, more people show interest in it. This helps me bring it to a bigger stage," he said.
Many schools in Sihong now have Qiangan Dance lessons. "I'm very happy to see that. It can help students to keep fit. I really hope that they can become interested in this special folk dance," said Hu.
