What Can Amber Tell Us?
Amber is not just beautiful jewellery. It is also a natural time capsule(胶囊). In 2024, scientists in Myanmar found a piece of amber the size of a ping-pong ball. Inside it was a tiny dinosaur tail covered with feathers. This discovery changed the old belief that all dinosaurs had scales.
Amber comes from the sticky resin(树脂) of ancient trees. When insects or small animals touch the resin, they can become trapped. Over millions of years, the resin hardens into amber, keeping the trapped creatures in perfect condition. In 2025, another team found a 100-million-year-old ant in African amber. This ant is so different from northern ants that scientists now think ants may have started in the southern half of the earth.
Because amber preserves soft parts like skin and feathers, it acts like a window on the past. Researchers can study the DNA of trapped insects, learn about ancient climates and even discover new species. "Amber is the key that helps us unlock the secrets of nature," said Dr Li, the leader of the 2025 study.
