C(真题·衢州)
Naomi was more embarrassed than ever before. It was her first day in a new school, and already her worst day. Mum came into the school, wearing that “modern” sweater and those broken jeans. How could she do that to Naomi? Didn’t she know that Naomi was nervous enough about starting in a new school? This was not fair! Naomi sat miserably on the ground. Nobody came near her, and it was easy to see why: Everyone was probably already laughing at her.
Just when Naomi thought things couldn’t get any worse, a girl came up to her and said, “You’re new here, aren’t you?”
“Yeah,” Naomi answered, “I am.”
“I didn’t think I knew you when I saw you in maths class before. I’m Emily, by the way.”
“I’m Naomi,” Naomi said. This girl was actually talking to her! After keeping quiet for a moment, Naomi invited Emily to sit down.
Emily sat down and then continued, “I saw you in the hall just now, too. Was that your mum with you?”
Naomi, unable to say anything, just nodded with embarrassment.
“You’re so lucky,” Emily said. “My mum doesn’t even live with me. I haven’t talked to her for a long time.”
Suddenly everything seemed different to Naomi. Not see your mum every day? Not have her there when you get home from school? That would be even more terrible than feeling embarrassed in public.
“I’m sorry,” Naomi finally said quietly, realizing staying with Mum is more important than what Mum looks like.
The two girls talked a lot. On their way to the next class, Naomi promised Emily she would meet her again tomorrow. And she promised herself she would say sorry to her mum later, too.

根据原文第一段“Mum came into the school, wearing that ‘modern’ sweater and those broken jeans. How could she do that to Naomi?”
第一段中Naomi因妈妈的穿着感到尴尬,“Nobody came near her, and it was easy to see why: Everyone was probably already laughing at her.” B“Tiredly(疲惫地)”、C“Comfortably(舒适地)”、D“Patiently(耐心地)”均不符合语境,故排除。
根据原文第九段Emily的话“My mum doesn’t even live with me. I haven’t talked to her for a long time.”,Naomi认为“Not see your mum every day? Not have her there when you get home from school? That would be even more terrible...”,可知“That”指代的是“不与妈妈住在一起”,对应选项B。
文章通过Naomi的经历,最终让她明白“staying with Mum is more important than what Mum looks like”,核心是传达“什么更重要”的主题,对应选项C。
