The Rabbit
When they said the time to hide was mine,
I hid back under a thick grapevine.
And while I was still for the time to pass,
A little grey thing came out of the .
He hopped his way through the clover patch,
And wiggled his nose and a white flash.
Came when he turned the side of his head,
And then he sat up straight and said:
"Oh, are you the one that stays so still?
I thought I was safe to come if you will
Not jump or cry, but only stay
While I eat my fill of the clover hay."
And so I waited while he ate
All the clover and cleaned his plate.
And then he winked and away he went,
And I was glad for the time I spent.

[2025江苏宿迁期中]It’s getting late. Then he notices something on the railway track at his
feet. He bends down to examine it—it’s a beautiful long brown feather（羽毛）, a hawk’s（鹰的） feather.
He follows the track and finds two more feathers. He stops and listens. Nothing. Then he hears a soft, strange sound. Where is it coming from? He walks toward the sound and spots a wooden box. The hawk is lying behind it.
It looks up at him and screeches（尖叫）.
Jack sees the bird is in pain. One of its wings（翅膀） is drooping to the ground. Its eyes are wide with fear, and its beak looks hard and sharp.
“What can I do?” Jack whispers. “How can I help you?”
Then he makes a decision. There’s only one thing he can do. He takes off his T-shirt and carefully wraps（包裹） it around the hawk. The hawk is terrified and struggles to escape. It tries to attack（攻击） Jack with its beak and claws, but Jack stays brave. He bundles the T-shirt around the hawk like a blanket, shielding himself from its strikes. Then he gently picks it up and carries it home.
Ten minutes later, Jack walks through the dimly lit streets. Some young men spot him and shout, “What’s under your T-shirt, mate?” Jack ignores them and keeps walking.
Half an hour later, a horrible thought strikes him—the hawk isn’t moving. Is it dead? He stops and lifts the edge（边缘） of his T-shirt. The hawk’s eyes are open and bright. It’s alive!
“Good boy,” Jack says softly.
