The 9th Asian Winter Games ended on Friday, February 14, 2025 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. Asia's growing influence on ice and snow sports was shown, and people praised the host's great organizing skills again.
After the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics changed China's winter sports scene three years ago, the successful 9th Asian Winter Games made use of that good start. It expanded the fun and excitement of winter sports to new places in Asia. These places include the hot and wet islands in Southeast Asia and the dry and very hot deserts in the west.
The 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin is the largest in history. A record 1,275 players from 34 countries and regions came to the provincial capital. Nine countries and regions got medals in total. This made the 2025 Winter Games the most competitive since the first one in 1986.
Cambodia and Saudi Arabia joined for the first time. Thailand won its first Asian Winter Games medal in the men's freeski slopestyle. The Philippines won its first gold medal in the men's curling(冰壶) team event. These things show that more Asian countries and regions are showing interest in winter sports.
"I believe my colleagues and I will all say that the 2025 Winter Games might be the most successful Asian Winter Games. What the Games really do is that it not only helps top players perform better, but also promotes winter sports throughout Asia," Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, first vice-president of the Olympic Council of Asia, said before the closing ceremony on Friday.
"Compared to earlier Games, we have many more young players from the south and west of Asia joining in. Even countries in the deserts are sending teams. And this is how we can reach our goal of making winter sports grow," said Husain Al Musallam, director-general of the OCA.
On Friday night, a wonderful closing ceremony ended the Asian Winter Games. Winter sports, which were once hard to imagine spreading in Asia, now have an exciting future. Saudi Arabia will take over from Harbin. It will be the first Arab nation and the first from West Asia to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.
