B
If someone asks you if trees can talk to each other, you may say no. But scientists are listening to trees in whole new ways. Now they think the answer to that question is yes.
Trees don’t talk to each other on the wind. They talk with the help of fungi(真菌) deep underground. Scientists sometimes call this the “web”(网), because it’s a bit like an internet for trees.
How does it work? Tree roots are covered in fine white hyphae(菌丝), the underground part of mushrooms. The hyphae’s job is to take in minerals(矿物质) and water from the soil. The fungi use some of themselves and pass some to the trees they stick to. In exchange, they get some of the sugar the trees make. These thin fungi can connect many trees for miles underground. And trees can use the fungi network to exchange food and compounds(化合物) with each other.
Scientists discovered this when they were studying how carbon(碳) travels through a tree. They fed one tree a special kind of carbon, and checked where it went in the roots and leaves. To their surprise, they also found the special carbon in the roots of nearby trees. The trees were sharing!
Trees in a forest can use the underground fungi network to help each other. They send sugar to neighbours who are sick or don’t get enough sun. They can also use the network to warn each other of danger. If a tree is being bitten by insects, it makes a special thing. Then, other trees get this through the fungi network and their neighbours also start making this compound, before the insects arrive. That way, all the trees do better.
So, although trees may be quiet, they can say a lot to you if you know how to listen.

19题:根据文章第二段“Trees talk with the help of fungi deep underground”可知,树木通过地下真菌交流。
19.C 20.C 21.A 22.C
