徐悲鸿
Xu Beihong was born in 1895 in Jiangsu Province. He was one of the "fathers of modern Chinese art".
Xu started learning Chinese painting when he was 9 years old. In 1919, he went to Paris to study sketching (素描) and learned about Western art. He worked hard to mix Chinese and Western art styles. In one of his famous works, Three Horses, Xu put together traditional Chinese coloring skills with Western realism(现实主义) to paint three strong horses standing under a big tree. After returning to China in 1927, Xu taught at the
National Central University.
While Xu was best known for painting horses, he also painted other animals and important historical scenes. Many of his animal paintings have deeper meanings. In Meeting of Forces in Tokyo (《会师东京》), painted in 1943, the artist shows a group of lions that stand for China and other countries fighting against fascism(法西斯主义). In the background, a rising red sun shows Xu's strong belief in winning the World Anti-Fascist War.
Besides being a painter, Xu was also an art educator. He wanted his students to be creative and love beauty. During his time as director of the Art Department at the National Central University, he set up many new courses such as sketching, oil painting and art theory (理论). Xu not only improved Chinese painting but also helped build the Chinese modern art education system.

文化 知识 糖画 「2026 吉林长春朝阳期中」
Sugar painting, as the name suggests, is a painting made of sugar. It's the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
During and after the Warring States Period(战国时代), the ancient people loved sweets and developed some ways of producing sugar. 11 Then it became popular and went into common people's homes. In the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. When it came to the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar. 12
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup(糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the "paintbrush", and a table as the "paper". 13 Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup "up, down, left and right". Soon a sugar painting is done.
14 The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What's worse, few people would like to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. 15 Through it, we may see the hard work and wisdom of ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) in China. It's a national treasure to be remembered, loved and passed on.
