Recently, a painting created by using AI technology has won first prize at the Colorado State Fair Fine Art Competition.
Jason M. Allen made the winning work. He is not an artist but a computer programmer. As one of the 11 “artists” in this competition, he used Midjourney to make the painting. This is the first AI painting to win such a prize, and other artists aren’t happy about it. Some believe that Allen cheated, while others think his win is unfair. Many artists made their art in more traditional ways.
But Allen said he was not sorry for anything because he didn’t break any rules. He never tried to hide the fact that he used AI to make the painting.
Although he used AI to make art, it wasn’t so easy. He made over 900 paintings and finally chose 3. In total, he spent over 80 hours working on them, using different words and phrases to make different parts of the paintings.
“We don’t need to question the AI technology or the people behind it. Instead, we need to realize that it’s a great tool, and we should make good use of it so that we can all move forward,” Allen said.
