It’s that time of year again! A big migration (迁徙) is going on in Africa. Every year from July to October, many wild animals make their way from south to north. They are looking for two things—food and water.
Zebras, wildebeests (角马) and gazelles (羚羊) make a great team. The zebras go first. With their good eyesight (视力), they walk in front. Many wildebeests go after them. Lastly, many gazelles run across the grassland. Zebras have strong stomachs. Along the way, they eat tall, rough grass first. They leave short, soft grass for wildebeests. Gazelles can only eat the smallest plants.
Why do they travel? From July to October, there is much more rain in the north. The rain helps grass grow. The animals go north to find more food.
How long is the trip? The animals travel about 3,000 km. That’s about the same distance (距离) as Beijing to Sanya in Hainan. It’s a long trip. Some animals have new babies along the road, but if they are too slow, they will become the food for lions and crocodiles. It’s a dangerous trip too.
