Zengzi, also called Zeng Shen, became a student of Confucius at the age of 16.
One morning, Zengzi's wife was going to the market. Her son wanted to go with her. She didn't agree(同意). "You can't go with me. It is too far." Her son was upset. He cried loudly. She cheated her son and said, "Wait for me at home. If you listen to me, I will kill a pig and cook a nice dish for you." The boy was happy and went back home. When Zengzi's wife came back, she didn't kill the pig. Zengzi then got ready to do it, but his wife stopped him. "I just cheated the child," she said.
Zengzi said, "We must be honest. Children learn from their parents. If you cheat him, he will not trust you. And he may cheat others in the future."
His wife felt sorry. She decided to keep her word. They killed the pig together and cooked a nice meal for their son. The boy was happy.
One evening, the boy ran outside. He said, "I promised to return(归还) a toy to a friend today. ▲" His parents smiled proudly(自豪地).
