Where is Harbin?
Harbin is the capital city of Heilongjiang Province and it lies in the northeast of China. At first, it was just a small fishing village. In the early 1900s, it grew bigger because it became a centre for building railroads. In 1917, many people from Russia came to live here. Today, you can still see some Russian-style buildings in Harbin. So people call it "Eastern Moscow". In 1946, Harbin began to develop into a big industrial centre.
How did the festival begin?
People in Harbin had their first ice and snow festival in 1963. But for many years, the festival stopped because of some political changes. In the 1970s and 1980s, more and more tourists came to Harbin. Then the government started to help hold the festival. The first official Harbin Ice and Snow Festival was held in 1985. In 2001, this festival joined with the Heilongjiang International Ski Festival and got its new official name: the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival.
