South Korean writer Han Kang won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. This is the first time the top literary award has been received by a South Korean author.
Han began her career as a writer in 1993 with the publication of several poems. For a long time, however, she wasn't well-known in the West. That changed when the English translation of her novel The Vegetarian (《素食者》) hit the shelves. Her rise to fame shows the power that translators have in the literary world. They do more than translate. They shape the way books are enjoyed around the world.
Deborah Smith is the British translator of The Vegetarian. In 2009, she decided to learn a language for fun. She chose Korean because "there was hardly anything Korean in English". A few years later, Smith came across Han's writing while studying for her Ph. D. in South Korean literature. She won an editor's heart with her translation of The Vegetarian. The book was Han's first to be translated into English. It came out in 2015 and won the International Booker Prize the following year.
Since then, The Vegetarian has been translated into more than thirty languages. And South Korean books are translated into English like never before. Han believes that this growing interest in South Korean stories may have something to do with her Booker win.
Major awards like the Nobel Prize and the International Booker Prize may be the peak of an author's career. But without English translations, the judges wouldn't have been able to read many of these award-winning books. It is especially challenging to translate Asian languages into English. Translators must make unclear and lengthy(冗长的) expressions clear and brief.
The cultural backgrounds are different too. "It's a tiring job. You have to work through a dark tunnel to find perfect matches between two languages," Han once said.
