South Korean writer Han Kang won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. This is the first time the top literary award has been received by a South Korean author.
Han began her career as a writer in 1993 with the publication of several poems. For a long time, however, she wasn't well-known in the West. That changed when the English translation of her novel The Vegetarian (《素食者》) hit the shelves. Her rise to fame shows the power that translators have in the literary world. Deborah Smith is the British translator of The Vegetarian. In 2009, she decided to learn a language for fun. She chose Korean because "there was hardly anything Korean in English".
