Taihu Lake—A Great Change
Taihu Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China. It is in Jiangsu Province. Many people live near it and get water from it. But about twenty years ago, the lake had a big problem. The water was very dirty. There were cyanobacteria（蓝绿藻） everywhere. People could not swim in it and the fish died.
Why did Taihu Lake become so dirty? Because people put waste water from factories and farms into the lake. The water became too rich in nutrients（营养物）. This made the cyanobacteria grow very fast. In 2007, the government（政府） started to clean the lake. First, workers took out the cyanobacteria from the water. They also stopped factories and farms from putting waste water into the lake. Next, scientists found new ways to clean the water. They put some plants in the lake to make the water clean. Finally, the government made new rules to protect the lake.
Now, Taihu Lake is much cleaner. The water is clear. Fish and birds are coming back. People can enjoy the beautiful lake again. But there is still more work to do. The government will make more rules to keep the lake clean. Everyone should help too.
