[2026江苏连云港调研]Horse-face skirts, also known as mamianqun, are traditional Chinese
dresses. They date back to the Song Dynasty. They became popular during the Ming Dynasty. Art works in ancient China often describe the skirt, showing its importance in Chinese fashion history.
The two sides (边) of horse-face skirts are pleated (有褶的), and there is a smooth part in the middle known as mamian. Horse-face skirts are colourful, mostly red and blue. Red means good luck and happiness. The Han women usually wore red skirts during important festivals. In the Qing Dynasty, blue was also popular, matched with black and yellow.
Horse-face skirts have different kinds of patterns with different meanings. For example, the loong and the phoenix (凤凰) patterns show the love between a man and a woman or a beautiful marriage. The peony (牡丹) patterns show wealth and status (财富和地位).
Now, horse-face skirts become popular skirts for hanfu lovers. More and more modern fashion designers find ideas from horse-face skirts. For example, some get ideas from the patterns. Some mix the styles of horse-face skirts with T-shirts or blouses. These are more suitable for everyday wear.
