新素材 The TV play Born to Be Alive has touched millions of hearts. It takes us to a beautiful but wild world. However, the play is just a window. Outside the window is the real Sanjiangyuan. It is not only where the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers begin, but also the home of brave people.
Hoh Xil, part of Sanjiangyuan area, is on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It’s over 4,200 metres high with thin air, and the wind cuts like a knife. Many years ago, the beautiful land faced a dark time. Thousands of Tibetan antelopes(藏羚羊) were hunted for their wool(羊毛). The land, once peaceful, was covered with blood. The antelopes, the pride of the plateau, almost disappeared(消失) from the earth.
To stop the killing, a group of heroes stood up. They are the real-life models for the characters in the play. One of them was Sonam Dargye. In the 1990s, with old tools and little food, he and his team fought against cruel hunters in the cold wild. Sadly, he was shot dead in a battle. His death woke up the whole nation. In 1997, Hoh Xil became a national nature reserve.
So far, the population of Tibetan antelopes in Hoh Xil has risen from less than 20,000 to over 70,000. The protectors used their lives to teach us a lesson. The “Tree of Life” doesn’t only grow in the soil. It also grows from the courage to protect nature and the wisdom to live with it.
