Wang Rui: From earthquake survivor to Paralympic champion
Wang Rui, aged in her thirties, a table tennis player from Sichuan, is a true inspiration. In 2008, at 15, she lost her right leg in the Wenchuan earthquake while studying in class. The disaster left her heartbroken, but a coach from the Sichuan disabled table tennis team changed her life.
In 2010, Wang joined her first competition—the Sichuan Provincial Games—and won gold. Her hard work paid off: she joined the national team in 2013 and won medals at the Asian Games and World Championships. In 2020, she competed in her second Paralympics in Tokyo. Alongside teammates, she beat the Dutch team 2-0 to win gold in the women's team event.
“Table tennis gave me a second life,” Wang said. She practises 8 hours daily, often sweating through her clothes. Her mother notes how the sport turned her quiet daughter into a smiling, confident person. At home, Wang keeps a suitcase full of medals, and her family plans to celebrate her latest gold with her favourite hot pot.
Wang's story shows that even after great pain, hope and hard work can lead to amazing achievements. “You never know your limits until you try,” she says.
