(A)
The Right Choice?
Huck Finn and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, were travelling down the Mississippi River on a raft. They had to hide themselves in the daytime and move only at night. However, Jim was sold to a farm by dishonest men while Huck was not around.
One morning, a heavy feeling of guilt suddenly came over Huck. He remembered clearly what everyone in his town had taught him—helping an escaped slave was a serious crime. The law regarded Jim as Miss Watson’s property, and Huck should report him. Huck thought that was the “right” thing to do. So he sat down and wrote a letter to Miss Watson, telling her where Jim was. For a moment, a weight lifted off his shoulders, and he felt a sense of relief.
But then he began to think about Jim. Jim was not just a “runaway slave” to him—Jim was his friend. Jim always took care of him in their hard days. One night, a violent storm broke out on the river. Jim covered Huck with his own blanket and stood in the rain the whole night. Jim also often talked about his wife and children.
He told Huck that once he got to the free States, he would work day and night to earn money and buy them back.
Huck stared down at the letter in his hands. Then he looked out at the dark river. He knew what he had to do.
Slowly, he tore the letter into small pieces and let them fall into the water. He decided to help Jim, even though the whole world considered it wrong. He got on his raft and headed downstream to save Jim.
Later, Huck thought about it all: Maybe I shouldn’t have asked myself so many questions. Sometimes the law tells you one thing, but your heart tells you another. Which one should you really follow?
