Cuju, the ancient Chinese football, is the oldest football game in the world. According to historical records, it appeared in the Shang Dynasty and the equipment was a stone ball which was encouraged by the army to build up a strong body among the soldiers. In the Han Dynasty, it became even more popular and was written into military (军事的) science. There were no less than 25 kinds of the game.
It is said that the first emperor of the Han Dynasty Liu Bang was proud of his father who was quite good at playing the ancient football—Cuju. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the earliest football club or guild was set up and named “Yuanshe”. At that time, many writings and artworks were created on the theme of Cuju, which showed its success. It was popular among all kinds of people and was played by people of all ages.
However, it slowly fell into decline (衰落), maybe because of the traditional idea of peace and kindness. Although Cuju was a competitive game at first, people, especially the ruling class, tried to make it a game for fun only. Today this game has been part of National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities (少数民族) of the People’s Republic of China.
