五、阅读理解
That year I was eleven and in the sixth grade. In Wethersfield, all sixth-graders are required to take part in the ROPE Programme. Its main idea is to learn the spirit of trusting your peers and cooperating(合作) with others. These programmes include falling backwards(向后) and trusting peers to catch you, working together and something of that kind.
I was ready to take part in these activities. Falling backwards was nothing to me. Crossing over a river with nothing holding me up but a rope was difficult, but I could manage it.
Finally the day came when my sixth grade class would travel to climb and rappel(绕绳滑下) a mountain. Those people who were too frightened(惊恐的) were allowed to practise climbing and rappelling a smaller area of rocks, but that wasn't for me. I could climb the big mountain.
▲ As I was well prepared, I set off at once. I got a quarter of the way up but couldn't seem to get any farther. I tried and tried. I began to put myself down and cry. There was nothing more awkward(令人尴尬的) than my classmates were looking at me.
All I kept hearing was “Lisa, you can do it.” “Try to fit your foot in there. Come on, Lisa. You’re almost there.”
Almost immediately I went on going up the mountain. Within five minutes I successfully made it to the top. And at that time I finally understood the main idea of the programme—to work together and believe your peers. They are the people who can help you out when you get stuck and lose direction.
