Chinese food is an important part of Chinese culture. Most people in China ask the question “Did you eat?” when they meet. It is not about the food. They just want to say “Hello”.
Traditional Chinese food always has special meanings behind it. People in the Jiangnan region love to eat niangao. Not only because it is sweet and sticky, but also because its name sounds like “getting better year by year”. So niangao means good wishes for a better life. People eat tangyuan or yuanxiao on the Lantern Festival. It is a symbol of family reunions (团圆). They eat zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival to remember Qu Yuan. And eating mooncakes (月饼) on the Mid-Autumn Festival also means people’s wishes to the families they love and miss.
On birthdays, Chinese people eat some eggs in the morning. Eggs are a symbol of life and good luck. They cook a large bowl of long noodles at noon for the family to enjoy. They never cut up the noodles because the long noodles are a symbol of long life.
