On Saturday, 4th December, Douglas' mum takes him and his sister Gretel to a shop in the morning. The shop is big and they can buy things at very good prices.
Douglas sees a yellow bike and he wants it. Gretel is interested in playing the guitar, so she asks Mum to buy one for her.
"It's Douglas' 12th birthday tomorrow, so he can get a gift," Mum says to Gretel. "You can get one on your 6th birthday next month."
Gretel is not pleased. She really likes the guitar. Seeing this, Douglas says to his mum, "I will not take the bike. Can you buy this guitar for Gretel?"
"Yes. But why, Douglas? It's your birthday tomorrow," asks Mum.
"I'll have a party tomorrow afternoon," says Douglas. "It'll be fun and I can get gifts at my party. So it's okay that Gretel gets the guitar."
Mum is proud of Douglas.
"Thank you, my dear brother," says Gretel.
Next afternoon, all of Douglas' friends come to the party and Douglas gets some nice gifts from them. They all have great fun.
