Every year in late summer or early autumn, the cows come back from the high mountain pastures (牧场) to their stalls (牛棚) in Val Pusteria, South Tyrol, Italy. Then local people get together and have a big festival to welcome them. It is called “Almabtrieb”. It means “the drive back from the high mountain pastures”.
The cows spend their summer on the pastures. They eat grass there for several months. From mid-September to early October, the local people decorate (装饰) the leading cows with bells, wreaths and flowers. Then the farmers bring them back to the valley (山谷).
When the cows arrive, the local people welcome them happily. They celebrate that the cows have come back safely.
Some Almabtrieb festivals are very famous. For example, in some villages, farmers make delicious traditional food, and there is music, parades, and folk dancing. This festival is also celebrated in other countries, such as Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
It is a wonderful tradition for everyone.
