At Gaoming Cangjiang Junior High School in Foshan, Guangdong, students often practise lion dance during club time. They hold bright lion heads and dance together. The lion dance club is very popular. Students not only get stronger and tougher, but also keep Foshan’s traditional culture alive.
“Lion dance is a cultural heritage(遗产) from Foshan. It’s not just a skill but an important way to share culture,” said coach Huang Jieqiang. He has taught lion dance for many years and knows how important it is for young people. “First, I tell students the history of lion dance. Then I teach them basic steps and routines(成套动作) one by one.”
“The school set up the lion dance club to help us learn about Lingnan culture,” said new member Chen Weiyan. The 40-minute weekly classes are fast and fun. “We learn cool moves like horse stance, jumps and head movements. Then we put them together into a routine and keep practising to make it perfect.”
Lion dance looks impressive, but it has many challenges. “The lion head looks cool, but it’s really heavy. Holding it up for a while makes your arms hurt, and you have to balance your movements,” explained Grade 8 student Zhou Zichun.
Lion dance requires both physical challenges and teamwork. “If the team is not well-coordinated, the whole show will be affected,” said Chen, who performs with the lion head. “Everyone must move to the same beat and work together.”
When talking about why lion dance is important today, Coach Huang hopes the club will help students learn to face challenges calmly and be responsible. It can make them more positive and hard-working.
