Sabal Newtson, a student from Florida, has become a special friend of homeless animals at the Jacksonville Humane Society(JHS). Since 2021, this kind-hearted girl has spent over 60 hours reading storybooks to shy dogs and cats, helping them feel safe around people.
It all began when Sabal joined JHS's "Pawsitive Reading" programme at age 9. "I've always loved animals," she said, remembering how nervous she felt reading to her first shelter(收容所) dog. But soon, both the animals and Sabal grew more confident. She even baked healthy treats for them using pumpkin and peanut butter!
Her love for shelter pets deepened(加深) when her family adopted Cuber, a gentle dog from JHS. After Cuber passed away last year, Sabal worked even harder. She started taking dogs on field trips to parks and created colourful "Adopt Me" signs to help the dogs find families. Her favourite moment was seeing a scared puppy she'd cared for go home with a smiling boy.
Sabal's parents were surprised by her hard work and devotion(奉献). "We were worried that she was too young," her mother said. "But she has been so responsible(有责任心的)." Last month, JHS chose Sabal as the first star of their "Kind Kids" programme. Her story will appear in their winter magazine.
Through summer camps at JHS, Sabal learnt how to understand animal behaviour. Now she teaches visitors:"Always be gentle. These pets might have had hard lives before." Her dream is to become an animal doctor while continuing volunteer work.
The JHS leader says Sabal shows that kind hearts can change the world for animals. For Sabal, the reward is simple: When a lonely dog waves its tail at me, I know I'm doing something important.

1. 第1题(细节理解题):定位原文第二段第一句“It all began when Sabal joined JHS's "Pawsitive Reading" programme at age 9.”,明确Sabal9岁时开始在JHS做志愿,对应选项B。
2. 第2题(词义猜测题):第三段提到“her family adopted Cuber, a gentle dog from JHS. After Cuber passed away last year, Sabal worked even harder”,由“Cuber去世后她更努力”可知,adopted意为“收养(成为宠物的主人)”,对应选项B。
