Florence Nightingale was a 19th-century nurse who saved many lives. She was born in a wealthy family. Unusual for her time, she rejected parties and getting married, wishing to serve as a nurse and help others all her life. Her family disagreed, because hospital conditions were terrible at that time. But she loved the work. At thirty-one, she studied nursing in Germany.
In 1854, British soldiers fought in the Crimean War. Army hospitals were in great need of nurses and food. Therefore, Nightingale and a team of nurses went to help. She worked nearly 20 hours a day to make the hospital cleaner and safer. She supplied food, cleaned the beds and cared for the injured(伤员), saving more lives. At night, she talked to them and helped them write letters to their families.
Back in England, Nightingale was honoured as a hero. Queen Victoria thanked her, and she became the first woman to receive the Order of Merit(功绩勋章).
