八、任务型阅读。(10 分)
The Dead Sea is a very special place. It is not actually a sea,but a lake. It lies between Jordan and Israel. What makes it so famous? It is one of the saltiest lakes in the world.
The water in the Dead Sea is about ten times saltier than sea water. Why is it so salty? Because the weather there is very hot and dry. Water from the lake evaporates(蒸发)quickly, but the salt stays. Over time, the water becomes saltier and saltier.
This high salt content leads to a very funny result:People can float(漂浮)easily on the water! You don't need to know how to swim. You can just lie on your back and read a newspaper without sinking. It's a fantastic experience for visitors.
However, the Dead Sea is also facing a problem. It is getting smaller. People are using too much water from the Jordan River, which is the main river flowing into the Dead Sea. So,less and less water is coming into the lake.
The Dead Sea is not just a tourist attraction. The water and mud(泥)from the Dead Sea are also used to make skin care products like lotions(润肤液)and soaps. Many people believe they are good for the skin.
It is called the “Dead” Sea because its water is too salty for most living things. Fish and plants cannot live in it. Only a few kinds of bacteria(细菌)can survive there. So,when you swim in it,you won't see any fish around you.
